Fuel Alternatives: Liquid Natural Gas and Compressed Natural Gas; What's Better?

In recent years, vehicular emissions have become a primary concern for scientists as they are possibly contributing to global warming. As a result, fuel alternatives have made an emergence, and one of those forms is natural gas. Comprised primarily of methane, these fossil fuels burn clean and pose a lesser threat to the environment. Consumers wishing to reduce their carbon footprint have been choosing to use this type of fuel, and they have the choice between two reputable candidates: liquid natural gas and compressed natural gas.

Compressed Natural Gas a Popular Choice

Compressed natural gas, also known as CNG, is stored in high pressure tanks capable of compressing the gas more than 3500 psi. The composition of this fuel alternative is complex and includes ethane, propane, nitrogen, helium and carbon dioxide. Since the gas is odorless, a compound containing sulfur is added for better detection in the event of a leak.

Liquid Natural Gas: Another Choice

Another popular alternative fuel is liquid natural gas, or LNG. This gas is stored in cryogenic liquid, a sub-zero substance that maintains temperatures below negative 205 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of its low temperature, LNG is able to offer consumers increased energy density comparable to diesel.

The Down Sides

As with any good thing, there are a few downsides to the use of alternative fuels such as CNG and LNG. For example, the storage units required to keep LNG cool can become expensive. Simply finding fueling stations can also prove to be a challenge as widespread use is not yet popularized. Consumers also face another challenge; in a struggling economy, the fact that natural gas does not contribute to optimal fuel mileage is a turnoff for many consumers.

A Responsible Choice

Despite the disadvantages, the use of alternative fuels are increasing in popularity, and this is mainly due to the fact that they emit 35 percent less greenhouse gases as well as 75 percent less smog pollutants.

As the effects of global warming become increasingly evident, it is expected that more people will begin to do their part in preserving precious natural resources. By implementing new habits into everyday life such as purchasing either CNG or LNG alternative fuel options, the negative effects of global warming can be decelerated.
